New Zealand fur seal (Arctocephalus forsteri / kek New Zealand fur seal (Arctocephalus forsteri / kekeno), a mother and a baby from this year.
.
.
Mother will feed the baby for 300 days, and sometimes even over a year. That's a long time. As the young becomes bigger and stronger, mother will leave the young in a group and hunt for herself for a day or two to start with, up to 20 days or so. She will then come back and feed the young and rest for 1-2 days.
.
.
These babies are still very small - a couple of months old. It seems to me that these babies are in full trust that mother will ALWAYS look after them - and forever - until they find that they can be independent, and want to be so.
.
.
But now is their sweet time - full tummy, friends to play with, mother to cuddle with. Life is good.

When my daughter was about 3 years old, I used to When my daughter was about 3 years old, I used to push her in the swing and look up for the clouds for a long long time. We found many creatures and objects there - ice cream, cows, bird, fish, pancakes, flowers, butterflies and so on and so on. Happy memories.
.
.
I once talked to a guy who can "see" supernatural matters. According to him, clouds are not 100% physical elements - it could be the manifestation of -- something.
.
.
I can't quite explain what he meant, as I could not understand myself. However, as with a lot of people in the world, I enjoy encountering "auspicious" signs in the clouds.
.
.
Today, we had high clouds - commonly known as mares' tails, or cirrus uncinus. It could mean "rain is on the way". And among them, I found something special - can you see?

I have to show this bird - the father bird of the I have to show this bird - the father bird of the previous post. Male South Island robin.
.
.
This bird flew in where THREE young birds were, ALL of them bigger than him. Then after a sudden and short pandemonium, he came out of it and rested on a branch.
.
.
Look at him - tattered feathers around its bill (I am sure juveniles were pecking at him), tired and skinny body, rather fed-up look in his eyes.... Hard to be a parent, right? You did so well, you should be super proud of these fat, energetic chicks!

South Island Robin (Petroica australis/ toutouwai South Island Robin (Petroica australis/ toutouwai / kakaruwai)is one of the delights of bush walking in New Zealand. They are very friendly and trusting, and often they come to you if you are standing or sitting very still. It is always so lovely to meet them in the woods.
.
.
But this time, encounter was even more special. This gray, fat one is a juvenile. And it was one of three!! They were all plump, and fluttering noisily among the bush. As I was standing quietly, they settled on one tree.
.
.
Then, something flew in, and suddenly all of them move crazily and flattering and calling! I was a bit shocked. Then I realized that the male - father - came back to them and they all wanted food!
.
.
Robin parents feed chicks 3 weeks while they are in the nest, and further 5-6 weeks after they fledge. So, as I watched, it was clear to me that the adult male was much smaller than these monster-hungry juveniles! Well, young birds, it is almost time that you learn to feed yourself....!

It was a calm and sunny afternoon today in Dunedin It was a calm and sunny afternoon today in Dunedin, so I went out to have a walk at my favorite beach, Aramoana.
.
.
A couple of days ago, there were about 7 orcas - yes, killer whales, swimming very close to this beach. Our friends from Wellington were just happen to be there and texted me!
.
.
Yesterday, my husband went out sailing with his friends and encountered about a dozen hector dolphins around the corner of this beach .
.
.
So I was secretly hoping that I might see something spectacular like these myself.
.
.
Water was tranparent blue-green, and a small group of young shags were flying in intricate formation over it. On the beach, there was a huge log-like sealion, whose face I could not see.
 .
.
“Well, it seems it is another beautiful, but not too extraordinary day for me” I thought. Then I noticed that the salt marsh plants were thriving.
.
.
I had a close look at them, and this one, beaded glasswort, or sarcocornia quinqueflora, particularly caught my attention. What a colorful gradation! And such cheerful form!
.
.
I knew, and I always thought, that salt marsh in summer is interesting, but I didn’t come for it.
.
.

Lucky me, I didn’t miss it this summer! Walk on the beach always rewards me with new joy. big or small.

Rifleman family that I met here consisted of 6-7 b Rifleman family that I met here consisted of 6-7 birds. Parents and juveniles, I thought, but there is a possibility that older siblings were there as well.
.
.
Rifleman does "co-operative breeding", meaning other birds might help the pair. The pair can have 2 clutches a season, and the young birds from first clutch might be still hanging around. Or, non-paired single male might be the helper to other family, interestingly.
.
.
Previous post shows the very young rifleman, with balloon-like body and non-established feather colors, while this one is apparently a young male, with clear green feather and speckled head. I wonder if this was a helper bird from the first clutch?
.
.
I have also read an interesting article "The song of the Rifleman" from New Zealand Geographic by Peter Hayden / Rod Morris (https://www.nzgeo.com/stories/the-song-of-the-rifleman/). The rifleman mother weighs about 7g, and lays 5 x 1.3g eggs - almost as heavy as herself! To achieve it, she lays one egg, then have 48 hours of "feeding holiday" before coming back to the nest to lay another. Also, male bird will give over 40% of his collected food to her. What a dedication for such tiny birds!
